Ostrich in Full Colour at J&B Met3 February 2010 Ostrich plumes in a blaze of colours were joyfully flaunted at
the 33st J&B Met Horse Racing Event held at Kenilworth near
Cape Town on 30 January. The theme: “In Full Colour” was
captured artfully in elegant designer outfits and several
costumes with head-dresses decorated with ostrich feathers
in Rio Carnival style rose head and shoulders above 30 000 visitors.
Mrs South Africa, Joani Johnson, presented the South African
Ostrich Business Chamber (SAOBC) at the J&B Met – one of the
major events on the South African fashion calendar and definitely
the biggest summer party annually held in Cape Town.
Joani wore a turquoise dress made from ostrich leather and
sliky chiffon, beaded with wooden beads and swarovski crystals
for a dash of sparkle. The ostrich leather for the dress was
sponsored by SCOT (South Cape Ostrich Tanning) in Mosselbaai,
also a member of the SAOBC. Her outfit was complemented by an
elegant ostrich leather handbag sponsored by the SAOBC.
Joani was one of the ten finalists at the Mrs World Beauty
Pageant held in Vietnam in November last year. Her glamorous
evening gown for this event was also made from ostrich leather
and ostrich feathers. Deon Oelofse, who also designed Joani’s
dress for the J&B Met, has made several designer outfits at the
instance of the SAOBC to emphasise the use of ostrich leather and
feathers in the fashion industry.
