SA ostrich industry participates in Trade Mission to Moscow18 May 2007
The CEO of the SA Ostrich Chamber was a member of a trade mission to Moscow from 13 to 17 May 2007.05.08 This
mission was an initiative of the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) who invited 26 industries
and industry organisations to be part of the mission.
Discussions and meetings centred on information regarding the potential for South African ostrich products in
Russia. It was apparent that the Muscovites are also interested in ostrich meat due to its health characteristics.
The demand for luxury goods, like ostrich leather is also growing in Russia as a result of the growing Russian
economy.
The South African ostrich industry increased awareness of ostrich leather in Russia since 2006 by giving an
ostrich leather brief case to the Russian president mr. Vladimir Putin and by sponsoring two South African
fashion designers to participate in the recent (April 2007) Moscow Fashion Week where ostrich leather designs
were featured.
The DTI compiled a special brochure with information regarding the industries that participated in this event.
