Export of Ostrich meat to Europe will continue20 November 2007
The South African Ostrich Business Chamber (SAOBC) expressed its gratitude and appreciation towards the
Department of Agriculture for its efforts to ensure the continuation of export of ostrich meat to Europe –
especially since it is now the peak season for consumption.
The European Commission decided to allow the
continued export of ostrich meat following inspections in South Africa earlier this year as well as a
successful joint meeting in Brussels between the Ostrich Industry, the Department of Agriculture and members
of the European Commission.
"The implications of this decision by the EU are that about 20 000 jobs are secured, contributing to rural
stability and that foreign income of about R1,2 billion per annum is not lost" says Anton Kruger, Chief
Executive Officer of the SAOBC. "It is also very important for our clients in Europe to know that they can
rely on a constant, uninterrupted supply of tasty ostrich meat of the highest quality and safety standards"
Kruger added.
"The partnership approach between the Industry and the Department, again proved to be a key to success" said
Kruger. "The systems and procedures developed and implemented by the SAOBC also play a significant role in this
process and we also thank all roleplayers for their cooperation."
