 Success for SA ostrich industry in Moscow24 November 2008
The SA Ostrich Business Chamber, (SAOBC) successfully participated in a recent South African Trade delegation to Moscow.
The two biggest achievements were that South African ostrich meat may now be exported to the Russian Federation
(and it is the only South African meat which is allowed by the Russian authorities), and the fact that the Moscow Design
Institute will include ostrich leather in the training of their students from 2009.

According to the CEO of the SAOBC, Anton Kruger, these achievements are the result of successful cooperation between the
industry and Government - Department of Agriculture and the Department of Trade and Industry (dti).
The SAOBC was the only industry that received an award from the South African ambassador, Dr. Bheki Langa, for its
contribution to develop trade relations between South Africa and the Russian Federation.
"The objectives of the SAOBC for participating in this event were to develop new markets for South African ostrich products,
as well as to create an awareness of our unique and high-quality products" Kruger said. These were achieved by the following:
-
an ostrich meat luncheon for 150 delegates, comprising three different ostrich meat dishes, prepared by one of South
Africa's top chefs, Pete Goffe-Wood. This was the first time that South African ostrich meat was served in Russia;
-
Presentation of ostrich leather-and feather products, including specially-designed garments by Deon Oelofse. The dresses,
in the colours of the flag of the Russian Federation, were showcased by Russian models;
- distribution of information leaflets on South African ostrich products - in Russian; and
- A formal presentation on the South African ostrich industry by Anton Kruger.
"The Russian market shows good potential for the high-quality South African ostrich products and thus the SAOBC appreciates
and participates in the opportunities created by die DTI", Kruger said.
